  Anti Bullying Policy

1.0 Policy
1.1 We are committed to providing a caring and safe environment in which we can all learn in a secure and stimulating atmosphere. Bullying stops this happening, so bullying will not be tolerated. It is the responsibility of all students, parents/carers and staff to work together to prevent it happening, however, as bullying is often hidden, we must be alert at all times and follow the correct procedures. To ignore it is to condone it. Bullying runs counter to the agreed Mission, Aims and Values of London Academy.

DEFINITION:
BULLYING IS THE CONTINUAL ATTEMPT TO MAKE SOMEONE’S LIFE A MISERY.

It takes many forms.
Physical:   pushing, poking, hitting etc.
Verbal:   name-calling, insults, spreading rumours, etc.
Indirect:   excluding, victimising, body language, graffiti, etc.
Sexual:   unwanted physical contact and comments

2.0 Students
2.1 Through P.S.E. and assemblies students will be given advice on how to prevent bullying. Students who are being bullied, or who witness someone else being bullied, must report it to a teacher. Advice will be given on how to do this confidentially.

3.0 Parents/Carers
3.1 If any Parent/Carer suspects that any bullying is taking place they are urged to contact their child’s form teacher immediately. All calls will be treated in strict confidence.

4.0 Staff
4.1 Seemingly isolated acts of unpleasantness may be part of a wider pattern of bullying so it is essential that staff use the following procedure.
4.2 An Incident Occurs
Follow normal behaviour policy
1.   Stop the poor behaviour
2.   Support the victim
3.   Deal with the perpetrators
4.   Take steps to prevent it happening again and pass any behaviour you need help with on to your Subject Leader.
4.3 However
5.   If you suspect that it might be a case of bullying
6.   Ask ‘victim’ to write the details
7.   Ask ‘bully’ to write the details.
8.   Staple accounts to yellow incident form and pass onto Director of Studies
9.   Don’t forget to send copy of form to Equal Opportunities Co-ordinator if appropriate.
4.4

The Director of Studies is the one with the best overview to decide who should deal with the case. If it is very serious, or if it is a continuation of previous behaviour, the Director of Studies should deal with it (with Head of Department’s help if appropriate). However, in most cases the Director of Studies will ask a form teacher or other suitable person to deal with it. Whoever handles the case should follow the same steps.

10.   Clear warning to the ‘bully’ that it must stop immediately (suggest strategies)
11.   Support victim (suggest strategies)
12.   Get students together – be firm but positive – have confidence that the bully wants to change too.
13.   Attempt a reconciliation
14.   Suitable punishment.

If a victim, or Parent/Carer, or other students report to you personally, always tell the DOS even if you might eventually be the person best suited to deal with it.

5.0 Anti Bullying Limitations
5.1 Restorative Justice
The Academy runs a restorative justice scheme in conjunction with the Community Liaison Officer. The Director of Studies should discuss any serious case of bullying with Deputy Principal, to see if matters might be helped by referring the incident for Restorative Justice procedures. Trained facilitators are available to work with both bully(ies) and victim to bring about reconciliation. Training has been undertaken by student peer mediators to work on cases of bullying.
5.2 Student Concern Box
This is a confidential box into which students can place notes if they or someone they know is being bullied. The notes are checked by the Deputy Principal and the matter is pursued. The box is outside the main Academy office.
5.3 Peer Mediation
A trained Year 8 group work with the younger students to provide support and companionship to vulnerable students. They concentrate particularly on victims of bullying.
5.4 CHIPS
Year 12 and 13 students have been trained by Childline to provide a support to victims of bullying. They run a ‘drop in’ centre at lunchtime and act on referrals from staff.
5.5 Counselling
The Academy nurse organises a drop in counselling session at Friday lunchtimes for students with problems. One group she works with victims of bullying.
