Examinations Entries and
Resits Policy |
| |
|
| 1.0 |
Aims |
| 1.1 |
The policy clarifies the procedures for public
examination entries and resits. |
| 1.2 |
The policy incorporates statutory obligations
under the Education (Prescribed Public Examinations)
Regulations 1989. |
| 1.3 |
It is linked to the Charges Policy and to the
policy concerning the conduct and procedures
for public examinations. |
| |
|

Entries |
| 2.1 |
Students have an entitlement to be entered
for all parts of the public examinations for
which they have been prepared in school. |
| 2.2 |
Parts of the public examination are defined
as the individual modules/units or examination
papers that form a component of a syllabus or
specification but do not in themselves constitute
a qualification. |
| 2.3 |
All parts therefore means that the students
will be entered for the examinations that constitute
the whole qualification. |
| 2.4 |
Exceptions to the above would be where the
governing body think that there are educational
reasons for not entering the student. |
| |
Educational reasons |
| 2.5 |
Student has not been adequately prepared for
the examination because he/she has not attended
sufficient lessons over the duration of the syllabus/specification. |
| 2.6 |
Student has not completed a compulsory coursework
examination. |
| |
Additional Reasons |
| 2.7 |
If the student’s parents/carers ask in
writing that the student should not be entered and
the principal is in agreement. |
| |
|
| 3.0 |
Resits |
| 3.1 |
Students have the opportunity to resit parts
of an examination once where they have failed
to achieve their minimum expected grade in that
part of their qualification. Students at London
Academy have the right to one resit paid for
by London Academy after discussion between the
Principal and the line manager for the subject
others are at the Principals discretion. The
Principal will take into account:- |
| |
| 1. |
|
Personal situation of the student |
| 2. |
|
Reasons for resit |
| 3. |
|
Chances of passing or gaining an increased
grade |
|
| |
|
| 4.0 |
Charging Policy |
| 4.1 |
The governing body reserves the right to charge
for examinations entries in the following circumstances: |
| |
| • |
|
Where the governing body has decided
that for educational reasons the student
should not be entered and the student wishes
to be entered. |
| • |
|
Where a student fails to attend an examination
which he or she was entered for and has
not provided a medical certificate justifying
their non-attendance. |
| • |
|
Where a student wished to resit a part
of an examination where they have previously
achieved their minimum expected grade. |
| • |
|
Where a student has requested a third
attempt at a part of an examination and
is not likely to achieve the minimum expected
grade. |

Appeals procedure |
| 5.1 |
Appeals Against Internal Assessment of Work
for External Qualifications. |
| 5.2 |
London Academy is committed to ensuring that
whenever staff assess students’ work for
external qualifications, this is done fairly,
consistently and in accordance with the specification
for the qualification concerned. Assessments
should be conducted by staff who have appropriate
knowledge, understanding and skills, and who
have been trained in this activity. Students’ work
should be produced and authenticated according
the requirements of the examination board. Where
a set of work is divided between staff, consistency
should be assured by internal moderation and
standardisation. |
| 5.3 |
If a student feels that this may not have happened
in relation to his/her work, s/he may make use
of this appeals procedure. Note that appeals
may only be made against the process that led
to the assessment and not against the mark or
grade. |
| 5.4 |
The existence of this procedure is made known
to students by reference in the student handbook. |
| 5.5 |
This procedure is available from the general
office, reception, and is posted on the student
notice board. |
| |
| 1. |
|
Appeals should be made as soon as possible,
and must be made at least two weeks before
the end of the last externally assessed paper
in the examinations series. (so the appeal
must be made before a date in mid-June for
the summer series as presently timetabled). |
| 2. |
|
Appeals should be made in writing to the
examinations officer or some other reasonably
senior post holder, who will investigate
the appeal. If the examinations officer was
directly involved in the assessment in questions
the Principal will appoint another member
of staff of similar or greater seniority
to conduct the investigation. Likewise if
the examinations officer is not able to conduct
the investigation for some other reason. |
| 3. |
|
The examinations officer or other member
of staff will decide whether the process
used for the internal assessment conformed
with the requirements of the awarding body
and the examinations code of practice of
the QCA. This will be done before the end
of the series. (Currently the end of June
for the summer series). |
| 4. |
|
You will be informed in writing of the
outcome of the appeal, including any correspondence
with the board, any changes made to the assessment
of your work, and any changes made to improve
matters in future. |
| 5. |
|
The outcome of the appeal will be made
known to the Principal, and will be logged
as a complaint under the complaints procedure.
A written record of the appeal will be kept
and made available to the awarding body at
their request. Should the appeal bring any
significant irregularity to light, the awarding
body will be informed. |
|
| 5.6 |
After work has been assessed internally it
is moderated by the awarding body (examinations
board) to ensure consistency between centres.
Such moderation frequently changes the marks
awarded for internally assessed work. That is
outside the control of London Academy and is
not covered by this procedure. If you have concerns
about it, please ask the examinations officer
for a copy of the appeals procedure of the relevant
examinations board. |
