Our Sponsor - Peter Shalson
Peter Shalson has been one of the most important contributors to London Academy’s success since its earliest days. A spectacularly successful entrepreneur and businessman, Peter was first approached to be an academy sponsor by Lord Adonis in 2001, who was then Minister for Education in Tony Blair’s Labour government and one of the main architects of the Academies programme. Having been a Hendon schoolboy himself, Peter knew that Edgware School, as it was then known, was in great need of investment and improvement. By agreeing to help financially, he became one of the first academy sponsors in the country. Importantly, he also pledged hands-on leadership of a vast improvement programme which included recruiting Norman Foster to design the now famous London Academy building.
Today Peter considers the success of London Academy one of his greatest achievements. By helping transform it into an acknowledged centre of excellence, a school that people want to go to, he has given the educational establishment and the local community an extraordinary example of how generous philanthropy combined with real vision can change young people’s lives for the better.
AIM Academies Trust Board and London Academy Governing Body.
London Academy became a multi-academy trust in April 2013. The Trust is named AIM Academies Trust and comprises London Academy and Deansbrook Junior School.
As a charity and company limited by guarantee, AIM Academies is governed by a Board of Directors who are responsible for, and oversee, the management and administration of the Company and the academies run by the Company. London Academy is one of the academies.
The Directors are accountable to external government agencies including the Charity Commission and the Department for Education for the quality of the education they provide and they are required to have systems in place through which they can assure themselves of quality, safety and good practice.
In order to discharge these responsibilities, the Directors appoint people (the “Local Governors”) with appropriate skills and knowledge to serve on a board (the “Local Governing Body”) which has been established to ensure the good governance of the Academy.
The Local Governing Body meets three times a year.
The Local Governing body therefore have delegated responsibilities from the Trust Board.
